The Big Tree in the Tsitsikamma Forest
This big, yellowwood tree is between 600 and 800 years old, and has been a popular tourist attraction for many years.
The yellowwood is a beautiful pale, unblemished wood and some of the yellowwood trees are over a thousand years old. A glimpse of some of these magnificent trees that survived the effects of the industry that revolved around their wood, can be viewed within a short walk when visiting the home of the Big Tree.
Near Plettenberg Bay, nestled in the Tsitsikamma Forest, this miraculous 36,6m tall tree with a trunk circumference of 9m, towers above all other trees. A well-maintained boardwalk leads visitors through the cool, lush forest. The boardwalk is only 1km and can easily be walked in 10 minutes. From the tree, there are 2 additional trails for the slightly more intrepid hiker.
The trail to the Big Tree is an easy walk, enjoyable on any day of the year and it is free!
The Big Tree is situated in close proximity of Tsitsikamma Village Inn. The perfect day-activity for the whole family. There are also other great adventures in the area.
